
Getting Your PCB Curing Right with Gallium Iodide UV Lamps
If you’re working with high-resolution circuit patterning, you know the struggle of getting your photoresist to cure just right. That’s where Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps come in. They aren’t your run-of-the-mill mercury lamps. We’ve tuned these to hit a very specific medium-wave UV sweet spot that actually gets deep into those thick resist layers. The balance of power and speed Here is the thing: your line speed depends entirely on your power density. Sure, cranking up the wattage means you can push more boards through the line. But there’s a catch. Too much heat puts a lot of stress on the quartz envelope. Plus, if you over-cure, your resist gets brittle. One wrong move and you’ve got cracking during development, which is a nightmare nobody wants. You have to find that “Goldilocks” zone between your conveyor speed and the wattage. Dealing with the heat These lamps run hot. Really hot. To keep them from popping under pressure, we use high-purity fused quartz that can handle the thermal expansion. But since these lamps concentrate so much energy into one band, they throw off a ton of infrared heat. You’ll want to make sure your cooling system is actually up to the task. If that heat stays on the PCB substrate, you’re looking at warping or delamination. Not a great look. Making it work in your shop We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You shouldn’t have to rebuild your whole array just to switch lamps. We spent a lot of time on the electrode geometry because we hate flicker. Flicker leads to those annoying inconsistent curing stripes across your boards. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference in the final result. And look, we’re confident in our gear. If the irradiance levels don’t match the top-tier brands at the same price point, we’ll make it right. We’ll compensate you. Just do yourself a favor: keep an eye on your lamp life. Swap them out before the output dips below your minimum threshold. It’s a lot cheaper to replace a lamp than it is to throw away a pile of scrapped boards.
